Chapter Five

“You’re here!” Amanda flew into Jonah’s arms.

“You look wonderful!” he said, hugging her tightly.

On the drive back to Amanda’s home, the conversation was filled with small talk, although Jonah sensed Amanda’s underlying tension.

She turned onto the private dirt road that led to the farmhouse, parked the car and they went inside. Odin was waiting at the door. After a look at Jonah, the cat scampered away, jumping up onto his favorite spot, the arm of the chair.

“It’s okay, Odin. Jonah is one of the good guys.

“Except for the mail carrier, we don’t get much company out here. It might take him a little while to get used to you, especially after what happened a couple of days ago,” Amanda said with a nervous grin.

“Have you forgotten that I am a cat whisperer? And what happened a couple of days ago?” Jonah asked, stepping toward the cat, and squatting in front of the chair.

“Nice to meet you, buddy.”

Jonah held out his hand, as if offering a handshake. The cat tilted his head, glanced from Jonah’s eyes to his hand, then stood and pushed his head against Jonah’s fingers. When Jonah rubbed the cat’s neck, Odin closed his eyes and purred.

Jonah looked over his shoulder. “What did I tell you?” he asked with a grin.

“You always were good with animals.”

“Manda, you still haven’t answered my question. What’s going on?”

“Do you still believe in ghosts?” she asked hurriedly.

“Absolutely. Is your next book a ghost story?”

“It might be a true one.”

“Is this place haunted?” he teased.

“It wasn’t until the day before yesterday.”

Jonah laughed, then stopped when he saw Amanda’s expression. “You’re serious?”

“I’m not sure that he’s a ghost exactly, but he suspended me in mid-air and told me I would die unless I agreed to kill someone else, and...”

“Whoa, whoa, hold on,” Jonah said, holding his hands out to shush her. “I think you need to slow down and start at the beginning.”

After a long breath, Amanda began again. “OK. I had the first dream about a year ago.”

Jonah listened to her entire story without uttering a sound.

“It is unbelievable, I know, but I swear to you... everything I’ve told you is exactly what happened,” she finished.

“It sounds like we are dealing with a demon.”

“I did some research and think that he is like an incubus. But, unlike a true incubus, he needs my consent before intercourse.”

Odin hissed, then jumped from the chair to the center of the room. As he had done before, he raced in a circle, once, twice, three times, then leaped into its center and growled.

“That’s what Odin does when he’s coming,” she stammered.

Jonah wrapped his arm around her shoulders, as the room’s temperature dropped. A dark haze appeared in front of them, and Zahror’s voice boomed. “The pen is running out of ink. Decide before the well runs dry.”

As before, when the entity disappeared, Odin leaped from his circle and into Amanda’s lap. Jonah reached for the cat and rubbed his ears. Odin purred contentedly.

Jonah spoke first. “If I hadn’t witnessed that, it would be awfully difficult to believe.
